In the summer of 2016 I received a fellowship to research Edouard Manet’s painting La dame aux éventails. My research culminated in a video, The Posers, which addresses the occlusion of the self through the selective and exclusive archives of history, but also love. The video examines the forgotten artistic legacy of Nina De Villard, the subject of Manet’s painting, who was herself a talented poet. The narrative is conveyed through a series of fabricated tableaux that meld real events from my experience as a young, female artist with those of De Villard and other forgotten women. Through simulation, language, and costume, the video slips between the fictional and the real. Surrealist confluences of the past and the present, such as Skype calls with an actor playing an actor playing Ms. De Villard, are the backbone of The Posers.
